1936 – 2015
Betty Schmoll was a pioneer and inspiration in the hospice movement in America. She was the founder and first president of Hospice of Dayton, and shepherded the organization through several periods of expansion, resulting in the exemplary facility we see today. Ms. Schmoll believed that terminally ill patients should be able to die with peace and dignity, and that the needs of the family should be
considered as well. From a modest beginning, she built an organization and physical plant that now serves about 600 patients a day. The Dayton Hospice has become a national model. Ms. Schmoll was honored for her work by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization with a Founders Award. She was a shining example of how one determined person with a good idea can
indeed make an enormous impact on a community and a nation.
